What a used sea can costs

Typical asking prices as of late 2026, before delivery and tax:

  • Used 20 ft: about $1,800–$3,500
  • Used 40 ft or 40 ft high cube: about $2,200–$4,800
  • As-is units with holes or bad doors: below those ranges, sometimes well below

Cargo-worthy units usually cost $300–$600 more than wind and watertight ones of the same size. Prices run lowest near the big depots in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal and climb with every kilometre of trucking.

Which grade do you need?

  • Cargo-worthy: structurally sound enough to be shipped again, usually with a valid CSC plate. Buy this if it will go back on a ship or a train.
  • Wind and watertight: no holes, doors that seal, not certified for shipping. This is the right grade for almost all storage on a farm, acreage or job site.
  • As-is: sold with known problems. Fine for a parts box or a cheap windbreak, a gamble for anything you need dry.

Check it before you pay

Ask for recent photos of the roof, floor and door seals, or go and see it. Step inside, have someone close the doors and look for daylight: any pinhole of light is a leak. Make sure the locking bars turn freely and the floor is solid near the doors, where forklifts do the most damage.

Questions

How old is a used sea can?

Most used containers sold off for storage are 10–15 years old and have finished their working life with a shipping line or leasing company. Containers that have done only a few trips are sometimes sold as "near new" or "multi-trip" at a price between used and one-trip.

Will a used sea can leak?

A wind and watertight or cargo-worthy unit should not leak when it is delivered. Leaks start later from pooled water on a dented roof or failed door gaskets, so set the container slightly higher at the back so water runs off the doors.

Is a used sea can worth it compared to new?

For storage, usually yes: a used 20 ft often costs $1,000 or more less than a one-trip unit and does the same job. Pay for new when looks matter, when you are converting it into an office or cabin, or when you want 20+ years of life.
