Insulated shipping containers for sale

An uninsulated steel box drips with condensation and freezes solid in a Canadian winter. Insulated sea cans fix both: spray-foamed and lined containers, plus old refrigerated containers (reefers) whose factory insulation is still good.

New insulated containers are added every week.

Two ways to get an insulated container

  • Spray foam a regular sea can. Closed-cell foam bonds to the steel and stops condensation. Expect about $2,000–$6,000 depending on size and thickness, more with a plywood or steel liner over it.
  • Buy a non-working reefer. Refrigerated containers have insulated walls, roof and floor from the factory and a washable stainless or aluminium interior. With the refrigeration unit dead or removed, used ones commonly list for about $5,800–$8,000.

Working reefers

A used reefer with a working refrigeration unit commonly lists for about $9,000–$10,000 for a 20 ft and $10,000–$15,000 for a 40 ft, as of late 2026. They need a large three-phase or 460 V supply in most cases, so confirm the power at your site before you buy one for cold storage.

What insulation is for

Insulation slows heat loss; it does not heat. For tools, paint, chemicals or anything that cannot freeze, add a heater and a thermostat. For a workshop or office, add ventilation too: people and propane heaters both put moisture in the air.

Questions

Do I need an insulated sea can?

For dry goods that tolerate cold, no: a wind and watertight container with a couple of vents is fine. For anything that sweats, freezes or rusts, or for working inside in winter, yes.

Are reefer containers good for storage?

Yes. A non-working reefer is one of the cheapest insulated boxes you can buy. The trade-offs are a slightly smaller interior and a heavier box than a standard container.
