What a sea can rental costs
Typical rates as of late 2026, before tax:
- 20 ft: about $100–$300 a month, with most quotes between $130 and $160
- 40 ft: about $225–$450 a month
- Delivery and pickup: usually billed separately, often $150–$500 each within a supplier's local area
- Office containers: from about $750 a month
Longer terms bring the monthly rate down, and some suppliers offer rent-to-own.
Rent or buy?
A used 20 ft costs roughly what 15–20 months of rent does. If you need storage for a renovation, a move or one construction season, rent. If you need it for two years or more, buying usually wins, and you can sell the container afterwards.
Before the truck arrives
- Space: a tilt-deck truck needs roughly 70 ft of straight, clear run for a 20 ft and 110–120 ft for a 40 ft, about 12 ft of width and 16 ft of height clear of wires and branches.
- Ground: firm and close to level. Gravel, pavement or packed ground works; soft lawns in spring do not.
- Permission: many cities need a permit for a container on a street or a residential lot. Check before you book.
Questions
How long is the minimum rental?
Usually one month, then month to month. Some suppliers bill in 28-day cycles. Ask whether delivery and pickup are both charged up front.
Can I rent a sea can for my driveway?
Yes, a 20 ft fits most driveways. Many municipalities allow a container on a residential driveway only for a limited time or with a permit, so check with your city before it arrives.
