Buying a container in B.C.

The Port of Vancouver is the busiest in Canada, so the Lower Mainland has a large supply of used and one-trip containers. Prices rise inland and on the Island because of trucking and ferry costs. Purchases from a dealer carry 5% GST and 7% PST.

Coastal and mountain conditions

  • On the wet coast, condensation is the main problem. Add vents or desiccant, and keep the container off the ground so the floor stays dry.
  • In the Interior and the north, snow load matters. Keep the roof clear in heavy winters; a container roof is not built to carry a deep, wet snowpack.
  • On sloped lots, ask about crane delivery: a tilt deck needs a long, near-level approach.

Questions

How much is a used container in B.C.?

As of late 2026, used 20 ft containers in the Lower Mainland commonly list from about $2,500–$3,800 and 40 ft high cubes from about $3,400–$4,000, before delivery and tax. Expect more in the Interior and on the Island.

Are shipping containers allowed on residential lots in B.C.?

Many B.C. municipalities restrict them, and some have bylaws aimed specifically at containers. Rural regional districts are often more flexible. Check before you buy.
