Facebook Marketplace is where a lot of used sea cans change hands in Canada, and it is free. Sea Can For Sale lists shipping containers only, graded and priced, with relayed messages and free dealer quotes. Here is an honest comparison, the scams to watch for, and how to buy safely on either.

## Sea Can For Sale vs Facebook Marketplace

| Feature | Sea Can For Sale | Facebook Marketplace |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cost | Free for buyers. Sellers pay one flat fee: $29 to list a container for sale or rent for 60 days, $49 for a modified container for 90 days | Free to list and to buy |
| What’s listed | Shipping containers only: for sale, for rent and modified | Everything; containers are one kind of item among many |
| Listing details | Every listing shows a price (or says open to offers), the size, the grade (one-trip, cargo-worthy, wind and watertight or as-is) and where the container sits | Whatever the seller writes in the title, description and photos |
| Contacting the seller | Buyers message sellers through the site; the seller’s email stays hidden until they choose to reply | Messenger, from a Facebook account |
| Dealer quotes | One free request goes to up to three dealers who deliver to your area | Message each seller yourself |
| Buyer protection | Pay the seller directly on delivery or pickup; we hold no money and never take a cut | Purchase Protection page said it isn’t available in our location (checked from Canada) ([source](https://www.facebook.com/help/228307904608701)) |
| Bad listings | Staff can pull a listing that breaks the rules, and the seller’s fee is refunded | Reported to Facebook |
| How many listings | New in October 2026, so far fewer listings than the big marketplaces | Far more, mostly local pickup or seller delivery |

## When Facebook Marketplace is the better choice

- You want the most listings near you right now: Marketplace has far more than we do today.
- You are buying a cheap as-is container locally and can inspect it yourself.
- You are selling one container and don’t want to pay any fee.

## Buying a used sea can safely, wherever you find it

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns that fraudsters post fake ads on classified and resale sites, and container dealers warn about fake websites copying real ones. The checks are the same on any site:

- See the container, or get a live video call, before you pay. Ask for the CSC plate, the container number and recent photos of the roof, floor and door seals.
- Do the light test: step inside, close the doors and look for daylight.
- Get the grade in writing: one-trip, cargo-worthy, wind and watertight or as-is.
- Pay on delivery or pickup where you can, and never send a deposit by e-transfer or crypto to someone you can’t verify.
- Check a dealer’s exact web address and phone number against their Google listing.
- If the price is far below the published prices in our price guide, treat it as a warning sign.

## Kijiji vs Facebook Marketplace for sea cans

Both are free to browse and both carry far more container ads than we do today. Kijiji ads sit in categories and cities you can filter, and a seller can add a phone number; Marketplace ties every seller to a Facebook profile and runs on Messenger. Neither checks the grade, the price or whether the container exists, so the safety steps above apply to both. Many sellers post on both, and on dealer sites, so search all of them before you pay.

- Fraud: the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns that fraudsters post fake merchandise ads on classified and resale sites. ([source](https://antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/scams-fraudes/merchandise-marchandises-eng.htm))
- Fake dealers: one national container dealer tells buyers to confirm its exact web domain and phone number before paying, because so much fraud targets the industry. ([source](https://www.atscontainers.com))

## Questions

### Does Facebook Marketplace protect sea can buyers?

Facebook’s Purchase Protection covers some purchases made through Marketplace checkout. When we opened Facebook’s Purchase Protection help page from Canada on October 21, 2026, it said Purchase Protection isn’t available in our location. Cash or e-transfer paid on delivery happens outside Facebook, so inspect the container before you pay.

### Is Sea Can For Sale free for buyers?

Yes. Browsing, messaging sellers and asking for dealer quotes are free. Sellers pay one flat listing fee, and we never take a cut of the sale.
